Machu Picchu, one of today's New World Wonders is an extraordinary example of scenic architecture with impressive constructions, well-balanced use of space and a perfect harmony with its surrounding nature.

Machu Picchu (Quechua word that means Old Mountain) was built between 1430 A.D. and 1440 A.D. by the Inca Empire at the top of a granite mountain at 2,400 m.a.sl. / 7,872 f.a.s.l.

The Incas, using ingenious engineering techniques, were able to transport heavy stone blocks up the mountain side, and once there, they used their excellent masonry skills to produce amazingly polished stones that fit together perfectly using every space in harmony.

There are two main sections: the urban area, which includes temples, palaces, stairways, and fountains; and the agricultural area made up of huge stairs-like terraces called andenes.

Machu Picchu is believed to have been fundamentally a place for religious purposes and a retreat and resting place for the rulers of the Incas Empire.

The Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary (32,492 hectares 80,255 acres) is a natural reserve which UNESCO declared a World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site in 1983.

Machu Picchu’s perfect location in the upper jungle contains ten life zones and two eco regions with great nature diversity and an enjoyable abundance of beauty.
