Sights & Activities:
The Andes White Mountain Range extends its icy chain of summits for 140 to 160 km north of Huaraz. It is an elaborate collection of toothed summits, razor-sharp ridges, pea-colored lakes and green valleys draped with crawling glaciers. In its fairly small area there are more than 50 peaks of 5700m or higher. Huascaran, at 6768m, is Peru’s highest mountain and the highest pinnacle in the tropics anywhere in the world.
Where once pre-Columbian and Inca cultures used the high valleys as passageways to eastern settlements, mountaineers and hikers now explore and marvel at the spectacle of the Andes White Mountain Range.
The main trekkings areas of the Andes White Mountain Range include sections, which are mostly encompassed by Huascaran National Park and to the South of Huaraz. There is something here for hikers of all skill and fitness levels: from short, easy hikes of a day or two, to multi-week adventures requiring technical mountain climbing skills.
